John CURTIS (abt 1790~1887)

Sarah WAKE(1783~1857)

John CURTIS was born about 1790 and  married Sarah WAKE on 1st February 1814 at All Saints Church, Southampton. They had 5 children, Thomas (1814), James (1816), William (1818), John (1820), Charles (1824). John is recorded living in Queen Street in 1814 and in 1820. In 1823 he is described as "Coachman to Lady Champneys" in Meon Stoke, but in 1834 he is a 'coachman' living at 3 Kingsland North. The 1841 census records Sarah and her son John living at North Front {Kingsland} The P.O. directory of 1846 records Mrs Curtis at 3 Upper North front and in the 1851 census Sarah and her sons James and Charles are living at the same address. Sarah died on 22nd Dec 1857 and was buried in Southampton Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, on 27th Dec 1857 in grave number I63/153. Two trade directory references to John CURTIS in Old Portswood in 1865, a coachman, and in 1871, a Publican, may refer to this John CURTIS, but there is no clear evidence of his death, and unusually he is not buried with his wife.

Sarah died on 22nd Dec 1857 and was buried in Southampton Old Cemetery, Hill lane, on 27th Dec 1857 in grave number I63/153
