Elizabeth BUCKLEY

(ne KERSHAW)

Circa. 1900

Elizabeth KERSHAW's parents were William KERSHAW and Eliza  PEARSON who were married at Oldham Parish Church on 20th October 1850.   William is  described as a 'labourer' living at Mill Bottom, (Saddleworth) and his father John is a weaver. Elizabeth also gives her residence as Mill Bottom and her father, Joshua PEARSON is a labourer although he is variously described as a Calico Printer or Dyer's labourer in various census entries. Joshua PEARSON was born about 1802 in Eccles, married Elizabeth and had 5 children. The family moved from Eccles to Calf Hey, Denshaw in about 1850 and on the death of Elizabeth PEARSON in 1855, Joshua re-married to Emma BALDWIN in Ashton. They had a daughter Alice J. born in Pendlebury in1856 but by 1881 Joshua is in Salford Workhouse, Eccles. He died 6 years later at the age of 85 in Salford.

The 1861 census Elizabeth PEARSON's  birth place as Pendleton, Lancs and shows that Elizabeth and William, living at Calfhey, had three children, John b. Q3 1854, Elizabeth b. 9th August 1857  and Harry b. Q3 1859. Sadly Eliza died in the Spring of 1863 and in the following Spring William re-married to Jane CROSSLEY of Scammonden, at Oldham.    William and Jane had 6 children, Albert (1865), Mary Alice (1868), David (1873), William Henry (1875), Emma (1880) and Nancy (1884).

Harry married Mary Jane KERSHAW at Rochdale in Spring 1881 and had 6 children, all born in Saddleworth; Sam (1882), James (1884), John (1886), Fred (1888), Harry (1891) and Frank (1895). In 1901 the family were living at Rye Hole, Delph.

Albert married Ann Elizabeth HULLEY at Oldham in the Spring of 1881and the couple had 2 sons, Ratcliffe (1888) born at Saddleworth and Fred (1890) born in Oldham. In 1901 they were living at 24 Dickens Street, St Thomas & Moorside, Oldham.

Elizabeth KERSHAW was born on 9th August 1857 at Culvert Junction, Saddleworth, probably at Calf Hey, the same place as her half-brother Albert. (see map). She is described as a cotton weaver, lodging at 74 Sholver in the 1881 Census. She married Joel BUCKLEY, Shoemaker of Owlerton, lodging at Junction, at Christ Church Denshaw on 4th September 1882. Her younger brother Albert was a witness to the marriage.
