John HEDGES and the SIMS Family

John HEDGES was born about 1780 in Bradford on Avon and married Susannah SIMES of Hilperton in about 1803.

Susannah, born about 1778 and baptised on 4th September 1785 , was the eldest of three sisters born to Stephen and Martha SIMS.

Her two younger sisters being Sarah, baptised with Susannah and Ann who was baptised in 1788.

Susannah's father, Stephen was the son of Stephen and Martha KEEN who married in 1746 in Hilperton.

Stephen himself  married Martha, surname unknown,  on 3rd December 1780 also at Hilperton

John HEDGES and Susannah had 10 children.....

Mary born on 5th November 1805, who married John PEARCE in Winsley on 17th October 1831and raised 4 children.

James born about 1804 and baptised at Bradford on Avon on 20th August 1815.

Thomas, born in 1808 and baptised in 1815, who married Angel SADLER on 28th January 1828 at Bradford and had 13 children.

William, 'Of Bear Field' born about 1811 and baptised Bradford in 1815.

Eliza,  'Of Bear Field' born about 1814 and baptised Bradford in 1815.

Charles,  'Of Bear Field' born about 1815 and baptised with his older brothers and sisters at Bradford on 20th August 1815.  Charles married Martha SAW at Winsley on 21st March 1836 and had a son Silas baptised at Bradford on Avon in 1836.

Frances, born about 1818.

Ann born about 1821 and baptised at Bradford in 1823. She may be the Ann HEDGES recorded as dying in Bath in 1895.

Solomon, born about 1823 and baptised at Bradford on 26th May 1823. He married Maria BRICKER of North Nibley, Glos. in 1846. The 1851 census records Solomon and Maria living with Susannah at Bearfield, but 10 years later, in the 1861 census, Solomon is shown as the Head of the household  with Maria and an adopted son, James, born in Kington, Somerset in 1859. Susannah is living with them and listed as an 'Out Pauper'.

Matthew, born about 1826 and baptised at Bradford on 9th August 1826. He married Ann SARTAIN of Hilperton in 1846 and had a son John William in 1847. Matthew re-married in 1857 to Annie WHITE and they had two children, Arthur, born in 1879 and Emily born in 1880. Matthew probably died before 1884, as Annie remarried to Thomas HART in the Autumn of that year.

John and Susannah could not afford to raise this large family and in 1827 they are recorded in Bradford on Avon Workhouse with seven of the children. The record is interesting as it lists the earnings and Parish relief that the family had at that time:

Hedges John, age 47, earns 8s, works for Thos Spackman, Bradford Leigh. residence New Town, settled Bradford.
Susan age 45,
Willm, age 16, earns 3s,
Eliza, Age 13,
Charles, age 11, earns 2s,
Francis, age 9.
Ann, age 6,
Solomon, age 4.
Mathew, age 6 mths. Relief 2s

Things clearly improved for the family and in the 1841 census they are living in Wine Street.

John must have died some time after this as he is not listed in the 1851 census when the family is still living in the New Town, Tory area of Bradford on Avon.
Susannah died  in 1861 aged 84 years and was one of the first burials in the newly consecrated cemetery at Bradford on Avon.
